Spanish midfielder Xabi Alonso seems to be getting closer to Real Madrid exit, Marca has revealed.
The 31-year-old has been out of action with a groin problem since May, but his recovery from the surgery did not go as planned.
Even if the player’s contract at Santiago Bernabeu is due to expire in a year’s time, the club chiefs are first waiting to see the midfielder in action before opening talks over a new deal.
Meanwhile, with summer signing Asier Illarramendi returning from injury, los Blancos are closely watching the talented footballer to see whether he can successfully deputize for his more experienced teammate.
This basically means that the future of Xabi Alonso could depend on the performances of Illarramendi, although everything suggests that the Spain international will be leaving his current employers at the earliest opportunity.
A return to English Premier League appears on the cards, with former club Liverpool and few more top sides showing interest.
