According to Bayer Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes (via Goal.com), Xabi Alonso has cleared up all uncertainty over his future by informing his employers he will be staying past this summer. This statement comes amid plenty of speculation about Carlo Ancelotti leaving Real Madrid and the former midfielder being chosen to replace him.
Alonso enjoyed a fruitful stint at Real as a player, winning the La Liga title, the Champions League, and the Copa del Rey. He also won the Champions League with Liverpool and three Bundesliga titles with Bayern Munich, before hanging up his boots in 2017 and turning to coaching. He is still widely expected to take charge at one of these clubs at some point in the future, but that moment doesn’t appear close for the time being.
As things stand at the moment, Alonso is under contract with Leverkusen until 2026, and the reigning Bundesliga champions expect him to honor its full length.
