San Jose Earthquakes coach Frank Yallop believes his new-look attack will trouble MLS defences in 2013.
Target man Mike Fucito has been drafted in to lead the Earthquakes’ attack and Yallop is excited by the prospect of pairing him with the league’s top scorer from last season, Chris Wondolowski
“Tactically we’ve had to change a few things without having a target man but Mike Fucito runs the line well and tries to get behind defences,” Yallop said.
“That stretches the opposition’s defence and it will maybe give Wondo (Chris Wondolowski) a bit of room in a different sort of manner.”
Wondolowski, who scored 27 goals last term, said he was looking to improve in the playoffs after the Earthquakes failed in the post season having finished the regular season on top of the standings.
“I thought we did well last year but that was last year. It’s a new team, a new season and we are planning on going on and expressing ourselves as much as possible,” Wondolowski said.
Fucito meanwhile said he hoped to get on the scoresheet with regularity but at first is simply looking to learn off prolific USA national Wondowloski.
“I have guys in front of me that have scored a lot of goals, I’m just trying to watch them and learn, and what better teacher than Chris Wondowloski,” Fucito said.
“I plan to score a lot of goals this year too.”
