It is easy to get carried away by young players that put in a few decent performances in the Premier League, especially those of the English persuasion.
However, there is an English youngster, who has undoubted talent, but seems to encounter problems wherever he goes.
That youngster is England under-21 star Ravel Morrison, who is currently on-loan at Championship club QPR from West Ham.
Strange
Something strange must have happened to prompt Morrison to leave the Boleyn Ground.
There were rumblings that West Ham boss Sam Allardyce was attempting to get Morrison to sign a contract with his agent and when he refused Big Sam was not happy.
However, the Hammers boss has now dismissed reports denying those particular stories by telling Sky Sports: “It’s completely unfounded. I think the rumours or allegations will be made probably by Ravel’s representatives.
“But there is no truth in the fact I have sat with Ravel Morrison and tried to press him into signing with any agent, never mind mine.
If it was not that then there was obviously something else that happened behind the scenes for West Ham to allow Morrison to leave the club. There is definitely something fishy going on. The Hammers are still not that far clear of relegation zone, so it seems strange that they would be allowing one of England’s brightest prospects to leave their club.
Promise
Ravel Morrison is regarded as one of the finest young English players of his generation. His natural ability is above most of his contemporaries. At the beginning of the campaign he produced performances that lead to people talking about him gate-crashing the England World Cup party.
Like any young player he experienced a slight dip in form, but surely was still an asset to the Irons? He is a player that can make things happen, even if he has a quiet game, he still has the ability to get his team a goal from nowhere or provide a killer pass for his teammates.
Reputation
I do not know Ravel personally, but he has picked-up a reputation as a troublemaker in his short career thus far. At just 21, controversy seems to follow the youngster round like a bad smell. Morrison did make some bad decisions in his younger years, but the noises coming out of West Ham are that he has matured a lot in recent times.
This season it looked like he had settled down and was enjoying his football at West Ham. People were starting to talk about his ability, not off-the-field problems or any other nonsense that has delayed the youngster’s ascension to Premier League regular.
It would be easy to lay the blame at Morrison’s door because of his previous behaviour, but that would be unfair, as there is very little to suggest that the youngster has done anything wrong. According to reports all he wanted to do was play football, learn on the training ground and develop his game further.
It seems that development may have been restricted by certain factors at West Ham and that was why he was so desperate to move on and was even willing to join a Championship club to do that.
Waste
So many talented young English players have wasted their careers because they have made bad career moves or have been poorly advised by their agents. The other thing that can wreck a career is a bad attitude.
At previous clubs Morrison apparently had a ‘bad attitude’ and that is why he did not settle at a club. However since joining West Ham he seems to have knuckled and is attempting to improve as a player.
Unfortunately something has gone on at West Ham which has persuaded the youngster that he needs to seek pastures new. Ravel Morrison does have major potential, as he has shown for West Ham this season.
However, I just hope in a few years we are not left wondering what might have been? Hopefully Morrison can settle down at QPR and people will be talking about his football ability. If Morrison can settle and find a stable environment to display his talent then he can go very far in the game.
If he cannot then he could be left on the English football scrapheap, wondering where it all went wrong. For the sake of English football I hope it is the former, because Ravel Morrison may just be England’s diamond in the rough.
Will Ravel Morrison have a successful Premier League career?
