Ashley Young says playing against his son Tyler in the FA Cup would be a career highlight as Everton prepare to face Peterborough United.

The two could become the first-ever father-son pairing to face each other in the competition should they both appear in Thursday’s third-round match-up at Goodison Park.

Should they both feature, the wider significance would not be lost on Young, who would be full of pride.

“If there was a possibility that we were able to play with each other or play against each other, it tops everything I’ve done in my career,” Ashley said in an interview published on Everton’s website.

“Hopefully, come game day we’re able to get on the same pitch. I’ve said it since the draw came out – it would be a goosebumps moment for me … I have to say it’ll be a massive moment for Tyler as well.

“He’s just starting out in his career, so for him to be able to showcase his talents in a fantastic stadium in front of a sell-out crowd – the most fans he will have played in front of – would be fantastic.”

This will be just the second competitive meeting between Everton and Peterborough United, with the Toffees winning 2-1 during an EFL second-round clash in September 2006.

Meanwhile, Tyler Young has explained why he has to be on his best behaviour against his dad’s side.

While Ashley has been a first-team regular for Everton this season, Tyler has made just one appearance for Peterborough, coming off the bench in an EFL Trophy game in October.

But the Everton defender will have to keep his wits about him if they do face off against each other.

“If I was to nutmeg my dad, he probably wouldn’t even say I was allowed back in the house,” said Tyler on The One Show.
