Ashley Young made his debut as Manchester United began their pre-season tour of the USA with a 4-1 win over New England Revolution.

Federico Macheda, back from his loan spell at Sampdoria, impressed, but veteran Michael Owen opened the scoring in the 49th minute.

Macheda looked sharp as he doubled his side’s advantage, slotting home after linking up nicely with Michael Carrick.

More than 51,000 fans packed in to New England’s Gillette Stadium, and they were given something to shout about when Benny Feilhaber’s free kick was deflected home.

Macheda soon restored United’s advantage, making the most of Rafael Da Silva’s deep cross.

United saved their best until last as Park Ji Sung completed the rout.

Young was praised by United manager Sir Alex Ferguson after he produced a number of decent crosses from his wide role and showed enough signs to suggest he will have no problem settling into his new surroundings.

“That was his position until last season when they started playing him behind the strikers in a more advanced role, like the way we use Wayne Rooney,” Ferguson said.

“His capabilities are such that he can play at wide left, he can play in behind the strikers and he can play wide right.

“He showed tonight he’s a fantastic crosser of the ball. I think he hit three fantastic crosses in the game, which maybe isn’t something we’re used to with the way we play.

“But if we do get used to it then there’s goals there. I was very satisfied.”

Wayne Rooney added: “Ashley has settled in well.”

“Everyone knows what Ashley is capable of. He put some excellent crosses in tonight and we are looking forward to playing a few more games with him.”

“We have an exciting young team now. Hopefully we can bring more success to the club.”

Next up for Sir Alex Ferguson’s side is a Match against the Seattle Sounders.

Was at the game the stadium was packed with Utd fans like myself and very little Revolution fans. Great game and great display. Rooney almost scored on another bicycle kick that he just missed. Best goal was clearly Parks. Come to us Wesley and Glory Glory!
