England boss Fabio Capello has promised to give youth a chance in the national team, yet there has been little sign of that in recent games.
Only Arsenal duo Kieran Gibbs and Jack Wilshere have been given their big chance. Capello even picked 33 year-old Kevin Davies ahead of youngster Andy Carroll for the squad to play Montenegro.
Light
It seems there is now light at the end of the tunnel for England fans. Capello has admitted he will give some younger players their chance in the next two friendly matches against France and Argentina.
Capello told Sky Sports: “We will play two friendly games, one against France here at Wembley and another against Argentina,”
“It will be important for me as I want to look at some new players. The players will come in from the U21s.
“I know the players that played today and the players that were off with injuries. It will be important that we enter the Wales game with all the players in the best situation.”
Hopefully that means a few changes to the team. There are obviously still problems in the side as last night’s 0-0 poor draw with Montenegro proved. The England team are still not playing at the top of their game.
It seems the England team still needs refreshing. Granted we were missing some players but a few of those players out injured were defenders and it was at the other end of the pitch that England struggled against the Montenegrins.
Youngsters
It will be interesting to see what players from the under-21 side actually make it into those squads for the two friendly games. I think the likes of Kieran Gibbs and Jack Wilshere are sure to be in those squads. Another name that has to be considered is Newcastle striker Andy Carroll.
He was expected to be named in the squad by many for the squad to face Montenegro but veteran Kevin Davies was selected ahead of the big striker. I think he now deserves his chance to shine. He gives Capello a different option and in my opinion he has the potential to be far more talented than current England beanpole Peter Crouch.
Everton midfielder Jack Rodwell will probably get into the squad for the Argentina friendly early next year, if fit. He is definitely one for the future and his play belies his age. He is also touted as a future Everton captain thanks to his mature outlook and leadership skills. He has already captained England at under-21 level.
Chance
It will be a chance for the youngsters to impress the Capello and his coaching staff. A lot of people have said England has no younger players coming through the ranks but these two games could be the ideal opportunity for our youngsters to prove their doubters wrong.
Lose
Capello really has nothing to lose by trying out his youngsters. The senior team haven’t exactly set the world alight in recent games and if a few of the younger players can perform in those friendly matches they could get a regular place in future England squads.
That could mean a trip to the European Championships (assuming we qualify) in 2012. What more incentive do they need to perform well?
Is Capello right to blood youngsters in the next two friendly games?
