Amr Zaki has continued to increase the rising tension between Egyptians and Algerians by claiming he turned down a move to Portsmouth, because it would mean he would play alongside Algerian defender Nadir Belhadj.
Zaki adds to the fire by stating he would also not play alongside Israeli Tal Ben Haim and under technical director Avram Grant.
Zaki said on his personal website: “I refused their offer before, but now joining Portsmouth is no longer an option for me,”
“After Portsmouth signed an Israeli player and also hired an Israeli football director (Avram Grant), a possible move was ruled out.
“On top of that, no way could I play at Portsmouth with an Algerian within in their ranks.”
Portsmouth owner Sulaiman Al-Fahim is believed to be in regular contact with the former Wigan striker, however other reports suggest that manager Paul Hart blocked a move for the Egyptian, believing he could disrupt the harmony at the club.
Relationships between Algeria and Egypt have soured immensely following Algeria’s 1-0 win in the World Cup Playoff last week, with both sets of fans engaging in violence.
