Inter captain Javier Zanetti has struggled to explain his side’s Champions League implosion against quarter-final opponents Schalke.
Despite leading on two separate occasions during the tie, the reigning champions now have a mammoth task on their hands for the return leg in Germany after losing the first leg 5-2.
“I cannot understand what happened,” Zanetti told Mediaset Premium. “I can’t even explain it to myself, let alone to you.”
Serbian midfielder Dejan Stankovic opened the scoring for Inter with an audacious volley from halfway following a rushed clearance from Manuel Neuer.
But the Serie A outfit conceded three goals after going into the break 2-2.
“We had a good start, then there was a black-out. Now we have to stay calm, look ahead and begin again by thinking positive,” Zanetti said.
“We’ve got to keep going, think of Serie A and then we’ll go to Germany to give it all we’ve got.”
