(GSM) – Mauro Zarate is ready to escort Lazio to safety as the club hovers above the relegation zone.
The 23-year-old striker is currently suspended after using foul and abusive language following his red card against Livorno just over a week ago.
Zarate’s performances have been heavily criticized this season, but the fans continue to idolize him.
Lazio are hovering just two points above the relegation zone and their coach, Edy Reja, has taken the team to a special training camp in Norcia.
“I will save Lazio,” Zarate is quoted as saying in Il Corriere dello Sport.
“I owe it to the club’s fantastic supporters,” he added.
Zarate has scored just three goals in Serie A this season and is no longer considered to be one of the first names on the team sheet.
He was inspirational last year, firing Lazio to glory in the Coppa Italia.
Zarate is expected to return next Wednesday when Lazio take on relegation strugglers Siena.
