Bayer Leverkusen have confirmed on their official website that veteran midfielder Boudewijn Zenden is currently training with the squad.
The 36-year-old has been a free agent since leaving Sunderland last summer, but he has yet to find a new club.
The Dutchman has now accepted an offer from Bayer Leverkusen boss Sami Hyypia to keep himself fit by training with the Bundesliga outfit.
“Boudewijn said he wanted to stay fit when we spoke in Helsinki,” Hyypia explained to club’s official website.
“I didn’t need to think twice about it as we’re good friends. And he doesn’t live far away from the Germany/Holland border.”
The two friends last met in a testimonial match in Helsinki between the Finland national team and a World XI and it was there that the idea was born.
Bayer Leverkusen squad were stripped to bare bones during the international break and the Bundesliga outfit were happy to welcome a true world-class player to their training sessions.
The former Netherlands international has been looking for a new club for over a year now, but he remains determined not to retire from football altogether.
