Zenit advance to Russian Cup semi finals

Zenit St. Petersburg secured a spot in the semi finals of the Russian Cup following a 2-0 win over Volga Tver on Wednesday. Sibir Novosibirsk and Alaniya Vladikavkaz are through as well.

All the pressure was on Zenit to earn a comfortable victory in their home match with second division side Volga Tver, and were on course to do so after a converted penalty from Szabolcs Huszti in the 27th minute.

Vladimir Bystrov doubled the advantage two minutes after the hour, but Volga Tver avoided conceding any more goals.

Sibir Novosibirsk were more convincing in a home match with Luch Vladivostok, who play their league games in the first division.

Dmitriy Molosh got the opener for Sibir in the 52nd minute, Gennadi Bliznyuk added a second two minutes later and Maksim Astafyev netted the third and final goal in the 68th, 3-0.

Premier League newcomers Alaniya Vladikavkaz were to strong for second division side Mordovia Saransk, winning the away match 0-3. The goals came from Georgi Bazaev, Sergey Kuznetsov andKaren Oganyan.

The remaining quarter final, between Moskva and Amkar Perm was postponed and is yet to be played.
