Zenit St Petersburg are stepping up their efforts to sign FC Porto defender Nicolas Otamendi, reports Russian newspaper Izvestia.
Having solved the problem with the full-back positions by signing Cristian Ansaldi and Igor Smolnikov, the Russian giants now aim to reinforce the heart of defence.
And while Nicolas Lombaerts continues his rich vein of form, the club officials have not been impressed by the performances of Luis Neto and Tomas Hubocan.
It is for that reason that Zenit have opened talks to sign Argentine stopper Nicolas Otamendi from Porto.
The Russians were unable to agree on the transfer fee in the summer transfer window, but they are confident they will make things right this winter.
Nicolas Otamendi, 25, has also been linked with Chelsea and Juventus, but it is believed the two clubs would not be able to match Zenit’s offer.
Luciano Spalletti’s side currently sit five points clear at the Russian Premier League summit and they are 2/5 to remain there come end of the season.
