Zizou backs Mexes

French legend Zinedine Zidane has backed under-fire Roma defender Philippe Mexes.

Mexes has shown poor form both for Roma and the French national side recently.

“It annoys me to see a player with enormous quality like Mexes come in for such criticism for a bad game,” Zizou wrote on his website.

“Mexes is part of the future of the French team and he could wear Les Bleus’ shirt for 10 years.

“Yet instead of offering him support, people try to get him out. That drives me wild.

“I know Mexes as a man – we aren’t friends but he has lots of qualities and he can be like Laurent Blanc, Lilian Thuram and William Gallas.”
