Zola doesn’t worry about his job

(GSM) – West Ham United boss Gianfranco Zola accepts that his future lies in the hands of the club’s owners after another disappointing result.

The Hammers have been involved in a serious relegation battle and last night’s home defeat against Wolverhampton Wanderers (1-3) has added to their woes as they are now just three points above the drop zone with seven games remaining.

The woeful run has seen Zola come in for criticism from certain sections of the club’s support, with the Italian’s position coming under increased threat.

He continues to take everything in his stride, though, and insists he will not allow speculation about his own future to affect his efforts on the field.

“The owners (David Sullivan and David Gold) can do whatever they feel is the right thing to do,” Zola said after the demoralising defeat to Wolves at Upton Park.

“I try to do my work as best I can every single day. If that’s not good enough, not considered good enough…

“I have no time or desire to live worrying about things. Worry doesn’t help me do a better job.”

The stress surrounding Upton Park is beginning to take its toll, with Carlton Cole confronting an irate supporter following the Wolves setback.

The England international had to be led away by police as he became involved in a heated debate, but Zola insists supporters should be taking their anger out on him, not his players.

“He had a problem with a fan but Carlton Cole represents West Ham and he is trying,” he added.

“Whether he’s not playing at his best right now is another matter, but he’s trying. If the fans have to pick on someone, they should pick on me.

“The team is not performing very well right now, not playing very well, and I take responsibility for that. So I have to take the criticism.”
