Borussia Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc has criticised Mario Goetze for announcing his departure to Bayern Munich mid-season.
Goetze’s switch to Bayern was revealed on April 23, on the eve of Dortmund’s UEFA Champions League semi-final first-leg meeting with Real Madrid, which the German side won 4-1 before going on to make the final, which Bayern were triumphant in.
The 21-year-old missed the Wembley showpiece due to injury, and watched from the stands as Bayern earned victory thanks to a late goal from Arjen Robben.
A wide number of Dortmund fans were angered by the move, and Zorc admits it was frustrating that the switch was revealed so close to a huge game in their season.
He told Bild: “Of course we were disappointed about his decision to leave us – especially about the timing. One has to admit that.”
Zorc did not completely villify the attacking midfielder however, and insisted he did not approve of the fans’ treatment of the Germany international.
“The vilification of him I condemn in the strongest terms. I have recently congratulated him for his birthday (June 3).”
Marco Reus has been the latest player to be rumored with a move away from the Westfalenstadion, but Zorc was quick to refute those suggestions.
“We have long-term plans with Marco,” he added.
