Middlesbrough’s relegation worries intensified on Saturday after being held 0-0 by Wigan in the Premiership.

The 0-0 draw left ‘Boro second from bottom and on the worst run of the Premiership this season of 14 without a win and indeed their worst ever sequence among the elite.

The match was a dull affair only marked in the first-half by the tough tackling of Wigan midfielder Lee Cattermole, who was fortunate enough not to be sent off after an appalling tackle on Didier Digard, who had to be stretchered off – which took six minutes but was later happily for him revealed to be just a thigh injury.

Cattermole, who was booed by his former club fans for that attempt, was also near to being sent-off for two challenges first on Gary O’Neil and then Afonso Alves, though, the latter was booked for diving.

The only shot of note was produced by Boro’s Stewart Downing and that was in the first-half which saw Chris Kirkland tip it over for a corner.
